Rare Match-up in Oden Cox
Before the big storm, precisely one week prior, 12 teams gathered at the lovely Shelter Harbor Inn for the 2011 Oden Cox Women’s Women’s Rhode Island Open. Jessica Glidden and Amy Stiga emerged as the 2011 Women’s Rhode Island Open champions when they defeated Deidre Redden and Trish Bloom in the final, 6-2, 6-2. Carolyn McCoy and Paula Fazli took 3rd over Barbara Coster and Leah Nero.
In a rarely duplicated scenario, two first round matches met again in the consolation and last gasp finals. The consolation round saw the mother/daughter team of Mary and Christine Sturgis defeat Asa Nillson and Barbara Horne while in the last gasp, Kathy Kulig and Joan Conners defeated Leslie Haskins and Sharon Edwards. This meant the four teams played their first round and then went through their respective ways, either immediately to the consolation or onto the quarter finals. Then in their fourth match of the day, met up against the same team they played in the first round...crazy, but fun!
Men's Rhode Island Championship Dodges a Snow Bullet
A horrible day for paddle- light rain well before noon and continuing to the end. In spite of that, there was some great play by all 16 teams. In the quarter finals, Rob Pierce and Mike Fried defeated Jay Brandeis and Bill Horne 6-4 6-4; Leo Power and Carl Gregor defeated Enrique Cotter and Varun Vasuvia 6-1 7-5; Geoff Cartier and Steve Godiksen defeated Johan Durant and Everitt Barnhall 6-2 7-5; and Alex Seiler and Jeff Morneau defeated Rob Caserta and Aaron Richinski 6-1 6-4.
In the semi finals, Pierce and Fried prevailed over Gregor and Power 6-7 7-5 7-5 and Seiler and Morneau prevailed 6-2 7-5. In the finals, Seiler and Morneau somehow survived match points against Pierce and Fried to win 7-6 (3) 6-7 (4) 7-6 (7). The consolation final was won by the McCormick brothers Pete and Dan over Garrett Gates and Sam Bietti 6-4 6-7 7-6. The reprieve finals were won by Cotter and Vasudeya over Barnhill and Durant 7-5 6-4.
